Pioneer Grove Wind Farm, Tipton, IA

The Pioneer Grove Wind Farm, which TVIG completed in 2012, is located near Tipton, Iowa at the site of the Acciona’s wind turbine manufacturing location. This is Acciona’s North American pilot demonstration project for both its flagship 3.0 MW turbine, the AW116/3000, and its unique 100 meter concrete tower design.

The project consists of one AW116/3000 turbine on a 100 meter concrete tower and one AW116/3000 on a 92 meter steel tower for a total project size of six megawatts. A 6-mile, 12 kV collection system connects the wind project to a 69 kV step up substation. TVIG was the BOP General Contractor whose scope of work included civil and foundation construction, turbine/concrete tower erection, and the electrical collection and substation.

A unique challenge to this project was the installation of the 100 meter concrete tower. A tower of its kind had not been erected in North American and the installation manual was in Spanish. TVIG was instrumental in helping Acciona develop the installation procedures and the conversion of the manual in English.
