Laurel Mountain Wind Farm Project – Elkins, WV

TVIG was general contractor for a project on a ragged ridgeline in central West Virginia built for AES Laurel Mountain, LLC. TVIG was responsible for the design/build of the project, including civil and electrical design, roads, foundations, substation, electrical collection system, and turbine erection.

The project consisted of sixty-eight GE 1.6 XLE Wind Turbine Generators; the turbine installation required extensive clearing and major civil and earthwork cut-and-fills to minimize steep grades. The civil work included drilling and rock blasting, as well as precision traffic management necessitated by a single point of entry and exit. Narrow track crane movements were required along a mountain ridge line with steep grades, made more challenging by severe winter weather.

The 91.5 MW project was completed in 2011.
